Issues and scientific framework

Forestry practices of the twentieth century were marked by the simplification of systems and the production of wood, whereas those of the twenty-first century will be defined by the management of the complexity of ecosystems.  Deciduous and temperate forests are complex (widely diversified in terms of plant and animal species, densely inhabited, and near large urban centres, and a source of value added wood).   It goes without saying that its development is highly complex and as such, research should be based on a solid knowledge of its functioning.

Another major challenge, which should be taken into consideration, concerns the evaluation of the goods and services that the deciduous and temperate forest provides.  Within a context where international markets are…., social and environmental services and the production of bioenergy, this evaluation is an integral part of ecosystem management based on complexity.   

Research areas

The proposed areas of research at ISFORT are not distinct and separate areas, but are rather on a continuum of knowledge and skills to be developed, monitored and transferred. 

In collaboration with its partners, ISFORT will develop research projects and concerted actions according to three large areas of research: 

  1. The functioning of ecosystems in the temperate forest :

A thoughtful management of the temperate forest involves maintaining natural processes and patterns critical to the proper functioning of its ecosystems.  Basic knowledge of the structure, the composition and dynamics of the natural components of these ecosystems are poorly known or unknown.   Acquiring this basic knowledge is a major challenge because, contrary to the boreal forest, the deciduous forest has been greatly altered by man since the beginning of colonization. 

 

  1. Characterization and monitoring of natural resources: 

The temperate deciduous forest is composed of a diversity of ecosystems, often presenting a heterogeneous composition and structure.  Such complexity poses a major planning and development challenge… …………. For the forest industry, this difficulty is accentuated by the notions of tree vigor and quality of products, essential characteristics for the industry.  It is therefore important to develop i) tools for the detailed characterization of natural resources and their variability, but also ii) tools for determining the health of ecosystems which might have been subjected to multiple environmental stresses.    

 

  1. Innovative approaches for the development of natural resources :

In this area, there will be an effort to better understand how to …temperate forest ecosystems to foster the production of goods and services as well as maintain this natural resource…. This requires the development of new forestry practices (both silviculture and management), but also better tools for monitoring performance and operations, economically and ecologically.  In addition, this development should be carried out within a context of intensification and diversification of products and services to respond rapidly to the variable wood and non-wood needs of the forestry industry.
