Analytical Services

ISFORT offers services for the preparation and analysis of samples of soil, roots, plants or other biological material by making its infrastructure and equipment available to other academic institutions and industry. Do not hesitate to contact Srdjan Ostojic or Régis Pouliot if you have any questions about our various analyzes.

Elemental analyse C-N-S

Equipement description :

TruMac CNS determines carbon, nitrogen and sulfur in a multitude of organic matrices, ranging from human food to animal feed, soils, fertilizers and plant tissue. The system uses a combustion technique which gives a result for all 3 elements in five minutes. Soil samples should be sieved, dried and crushed before analysis, while other types of samples should only be dried and crushed.

Organic matter determination

Equipement description :

For the determination of organic matter, we place the samples at a temperature of 550 ° C for at least 2 hours according to the MA.100 – S.T.1.1 protocol. We use a 1100 ° C, COLE-PARMER, CBF SERIES furnace which has an automatic adjustment function that allows the furnace to perform best at a particular set point and load, thus eliminating temperature overshoots for a commonly used application. Fully integrated heating elements maintain temperature uniformity. A door switch cuts power to the heating elements when the door is open, minimizing your exposure to hot temperatures and extending the life of the heating elements. Unique ceramic fiber insulation and double wall construction minimize exterior surface temperatures.

Soil particle size analyses

Description of the analysis protocol (MA. 100 – Gran. 2.0) :

Particle size analysis of a soil consists of determining the proportion of the various particle size classes. There are several methods for determining grain size but there is no one perfect method. The accuracy of the method depends on the nature of the soil and, more specifically, on the geometric shape of the particles and the percentage of organic matter they contain. We use the hydrometric method (Soil sampling and methods of analysis, Carter M.R. (1993), Chapter 55, Particle Size Distribution, D. Kroetsch and C. Wangpages, p.720 à 722)

If the sample contains 5% to 15% organic matter or it may contain carbonates, the organic matter and carbonates are destroyed according to the MA protocol. 100 – Gran. 2.0. If the sample contains less than 5% organic matter, the particle size measurement is carried out directly. If an organic matter rate greater than 15% is obtained, the granulometry cannot be carried out, because the sample is no longer considered as mineral soil but is part of the organic layers of the soil.

Dendrochronology expertise

Description of the available analyzes :

ISFORT also offers a tree sample collection and analysis service (endrochronological samples) to determine the age or annual growth of your trees. This is done by taking a single carrot per tree which is equivalent to a notch on a sugar maple.

Equipement :

We use Pressler probes of different lengths depending on the size of the trees as well as different probes for hardwood species.

Fees for sample collection and analyses

Here is a description of the fees for the various steps required to determine the age and annual growth of the tree. Costs are higher for deciduous trees compared to softwood because there are more preparation steps and determining age and growth is more laborious than for softwood species making sample readings longer. If you have special needs contact Benoit Gendreau-Berthiaume who will answer your questions

Steps Tree types Tress ˂ 30cm DBH1 Trees ≥ 30cm DBH
Field sampling Conifers 3.5$/tree 5$/tree
Broadleafs 5$/tree 7$/tree
Age determination Conifers 4.85$/tree 6.35$/tree
Broadleafs 6.95$/tree 8.95$/tree
Growth measurements Conifers 8.35$/tree 11.35$/tree

Example of costs including collection and analysis :

a) Age determination for 10 coniferous trees of ˂ 30cm DBP : 83.5$
b) Age determination for 10 broadleaf trees of ≥ 30cm DBP : 159.5$
c) Determination of growth for 10 coniferous trees of ˂ 30cm DHP : 163.5$
